May It Be

May It Be  is a song sung by Enya that  can be heard in the credits of Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Rings. Some of the words are written in Elvish, just appropriate because the setting was supposedly Middle-Earth ,where this language is being used. Take a closer look at the lyrics:

May it be an evening star
Shines down upon you
May it be when darkness falls
Your heart will be true
You walk a lonely road
Oh! How far you are from home

Mornie utúlië (darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantië (darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now

May it be the shadows call
Will fly away
May it be you journey on
To light the day
When the night is overcome
You may rise to find the sun

Mornie utúlië (darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantië (darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now

A promise lives within you now

Without the music (and the Elvish language), you might think it is just one of these inspirational pieces that you can turn to over and over again to douse a trodden spirit. Incorporating the music totally transforms the work to a different level, definitely mystical. It takes you to a state of optimism where there is peace and contentment. If only the world can be transformed into that place, there will be no more war, famine, hatred, and fear.

As a composer, Enya did her homework, as she always does in her other works. She has an extraordinary brand of composing songs which is absolute to an artist's staying power. She may not have the best vocals but she compensates the lack of it through her creative musical arrangements and  her ability to play various instruments. Her compositions are simple but uses extensive multi-tracking or layered vocals which make the sound unique to her.

Interestingly, Lisa Kelly of Celtic Woman shares a solid voice to a timeless composition. Let's hear it as we are haunted and buoyed into another place and time.

  1. I feel like I am floating in the air. There is a sense of freedom and peace in this song. Let the promise fluorish.
